Support — Steps Into HA
Steps Into HA has two halves: the iPhone app, and a companion integration that runs inside your own Home Assistant. Most setup problems come from the connection between them.
Setting up for the first time
The quickest route is the companion integration. Install Steps Into HA in Home Assistant through HACS, restart, then go to Settings → Devices & Services → Add Integration → Steps Into HA and add a person. Home Assistant creates a private webhook for them and shows a QR code. Open the iPhone app, allow Health access, and scan it.
You can also skip the integration and add a template: block to your configuration.yaml by hand. The app supports both — pick the route with the segmented control on the setup screen.
My steps aren't arriving in Home Assistant
Work through these in order:
- Is the phone on the same network? If your Home Assistant address is a local one, the phone has to be on your home Wi-Fi to reach it.
- Is the address right? It needs to include how to reach Home Assistant from the phone, exactly as you'd type it into a browser on that phone.
- Did you allow Health access? Check Settings → Health → Data Access & Devices → Steps Into HA.
- Try a manual send. Tap Send my steps now in the app. If that works but background sync doesn't, see below.
Background sync isn't running
iOS decides when to run background work, and it's deliberately conservative — it learns your usage and prefers times when the phone is charging and on Wi-Fi. Roughly hourly is the target, not a guarantee. Opening the app and tapping Send my steps now always works immediately.
The QR code won't scan
The app needs camera access to scan. Check Settings → Steps Into HA → Camera. If the camera is unavailable, the integration also shows the address and webhook ID as text you can type in by hand.
